Location and Environment
Known as the largest city square of the world, the Tienanmen Square of Beijing is visited by thousands of tourists daily, a majority of them to watch the flag hoisting ceremony. Situated in the heart of Beijing city, it covers an area of 440,000 square meters or 440 hectares, having a length of 880 meters and a width of 500 meters and can accommodate one million people. It was here that the President Mao Zedong declared the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The square is always crowded with tourists due to several worth visiting places located around it. Right in the centre of the square stands the monument to the people’s heroes. The 38 meter high granite monument which is an obelisk, was erected in 1958 with the following words written by Mao Zi Tung engraved on it: People’s heroes are immortal. To the west of the square is the great Hall of the people; at the east side is the China National Museum; and to the south of the square can be seen the Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao, divided into three sub-halls. In one of them is the body of the deceased Chairman Mao placed in a crystal coffin which is always kept covered by fresh flowers and grasses of high quality.
The Past in Brief
The square was initially laid down in 1417 during the period of the Ming dynasty. Until the removal from power of the last imperial ruler in 1911, the square was the place where declaration about the new emperor ascending to the throne was made. For centuries it had served as gate to the “Forbidden City“--- a large collection of imperial palaces of 24 emperors belonging to the Ming and Quing dynasties. Built between 1402 and 1420 by the emperor Zhudi, it comprises 8707 palaces and is one of the top ranking palatial structures of the world.
The interesting ceremony of hoisting the five starred red coloured national flag of china by guard of honour at the square is really a thing worth seeing. To watch this ceremony is considered to be a must for every Chinese citizen visiting the capital. Such a large number of people come to the square to watch the event that, in order to view it more closely, tourists get up early in morning, even before sunrise, and rush to the square. At the northern end of the square, there is a huge tower called the Tienanmen Tower to which are added gigantic reviewing stands for watching the flag raising ceremony.
The square has seen a tragic incident in the year 1989 A.D., when a large student rally was held at the place in the month of June demanding for democracy. The rally was attacked by troops sent by the government along with tanks which opened fire on students, killing many of them.
